BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that is reported to be rare in Africans. The objective of this study is to share the experience of our Gastroenterology practice in Calabar, Cross River State on IBD. METHODS: This is a ten-year review of the records of patients visiting the Gastroenterology clinic of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and two private gastroenterology clinics in Calabar Municipality. The diagnosis of IBD was made based on clinical, laboratory, endoscopic, and histological data obtained. RESULTS: Eight patients presented with features consistent with IBD. Six had ulcerative colitis while 2 had Crohn's disease. Seven patients had moderate disease with the main clinical features being recurrent mucoid bloody diarrhoea. All the patients had treatments with either sulphasalazine or mesalazine as well as azathioprine, steroids and antibiotics with variable response. One patient had strictures requiring a colostomy, while another developed colorectal cancer as complications of IBD. CONCLUSION: Although IBD is uncommon in Nigeria, a high index of suspicion is important, especially in patients presenting with the recurrent passage of mucoid bloody stools. Hence, the role of colonoscopy and histology are invaluable in establishing the diagnosis.


FONDEMENT: La maladie inflammatoire de l'intestin (MII) est un trouble inflammatoire chronique du tractus gastro-intestinal qui est rapporté comme étant rare chez les Africains. L'objectif de cette étude est de partager l'expérience de notre pratique en gastroentérologie à Calabar, dans l'État de Cross River, sur la MII. MÉTHODES: Il s'agit d'une revue de dix ans des dossiers des patients fréquentant la clinique de gastro-entérologie de l'Hôpital universitaire de Calabar et de deux cliniques privées de gastroentérologie dans la municipalité de Calabar. Le diagnostic de MII a été posé sur la base de données cliniques, biologiques, endoscopiques et histologiques obtenues. RÉSULTATS: Huit patients présentaient des caractéristiques compatibles avec la MII. Six présentaient une colite ulcéreuse tandis que 2 présentaient une maladie de Crohn. Sept patients avaient une maladie modérée avec comme principale caractéristique clinique des diarrhées muqueuses sanglantes récurrentes. Tous les patients ont été traités soit avec de la sulfasalazine soit avec de la mésalazine ainsi que de l'azathioprine, des stéroïdes et des antibiotiques avec une réponse variable. Un patient avait des sténoses nécessitant une colostomie, tandis qu'un autre développait un cancer colorectal comme complications de la MII. CONCLUSION: Bien que la MII soit rare au Nigeria, un indice de suspicion élevé est important, surtout chez les patients présentant un passage récurrent de selles muqueuses sanglantes. Ainsi, le rôle de la coloscopie et de l'histologie est inestimable pour établir le diagnostic. MOTS-CLÉS: Adultes, Maladie de Crohn, Maladie inflammatoire de l'intestin, Colite ulcéreuse.

INTRODUCTION: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a global chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and the poor efficacy of currently available pharmacological regimens makes the management of UC a great challenge. Moxibustion has shown great potential in the management of UC. However, its effectiveness and safety are still controversial. The purpose of this study is to synthesise the latest evidence regarding the clinical efficacy and safety of moxibustion for UC. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP and SinoMed databases will be searched from inception to July 2023, to identify all randomised controlled trials with moxibustion for UC. The primary outcome will be clinical efficacy, as measured by validated scales. The serum inflammatory factor, colonoscopy results, quality of life, recurrence rate and adverse events will be the secondary outcomes. The Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool will be used to assess the methodological quality of each included trial. All data extraction will be carried out independently by two investigators. RevMan V.5.4 software will be used for data analysis and Cochran's Q statistic and I2 test will be used to assess heterogeneity between studies. In addition, we will perform subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses and publication bias if the available data are sufficient. The strength of evidence will be graded using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval is not required for this review. Our findings will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42023425481.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Although diet is one of the potential environmental factors affecting ulcerative colitis (UC), evidence is not sufficient to draw definitive conclusions. This Japanese case-control study examined the association between the consumption of coffee, other caffeine-containing beverages and food, and total caffeine and the risk of UC. METHODS: The study involved 384 UC cases and 665 control subjects. Intake of coffee, decaffeinated coffee, black tea, green tea, oolong tea, carbonated soft drinks, and chocolate snacks was measured with a semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Adjustments were made for sex, age, pack-years of smoking, alcohol consumption, history of appendicitis, family history of UC, education level, body mass index, and intake of vitamin C, retinol, and total energy. RESULTS: Higher consumption of coffee and carbonated soft drinks was associated with a reduced risk of UC with a significant dose-response relationship (P for trend for coffee and carbonated soft drinks were <0.0001 and 0.01, respectively), whereas higher consumption of chocolate snacks was significantly associated with an increased risk of UC. No association was observed between consumption of decaffeinated coffee, black tea, green tea, or oolong tea and the risk of UC. Total caffeine intake was inversely associated with the risk of UC; the adjusted odds ratio between extreme quartiles was 0.44 (95% confidence interval: 0.29-0.67; P for trend <0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed that intake of coffee and caffeine is also associated with a reduced risk of UC in Japan where people consume relatively low quantities of coffee compared with Western countries.

RESUMO

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease (IMID) of the gastrointestinal tract and includes two subtypes: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It is well-recognized that IBD is associated with a complex multifactorial aetiology that includes genetic predisposition and environmental exposures, with downstream dysregulation of systemic immune function and host-microbial interactions in the local environment in the gut. Evidence to support the notion of a multistage development of IBD is growing, as has been observed in other IMIDs such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. With the rising worldwide incidence of IBD, it is increasingly important to understand the complex interplay of pathological events during the different stages of disease development to enable IBD prediction and prevention strategies. In this article, we review comprehensively the current evidence pertaining to the preclinical phase of IBD, including at-risk, initiation and expansion phases. We also discuss the framework of preclinical IBD, expanding on underlying pathways in IBD development, future research directions and IBD development in the context of other IMIDs.

BACKGROUND: Nutri-score is now widely available in food packages in Europe. AIM: To study the overall nutritional quality of the diet in relation to risks of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort METHODS: We collected dietary data at baseline from validated food frequency questionnaires. We used a dietary index based on the UK Food Standards Agency modified nutrient profiling system (FSAm-NPS-DI) underlying the Nutri-Score label, to measure the nutritional quality of the diet. We estimated the association between FSAm-NPS-DI score, and CD and UC risks using Cox models stratified by centre, sex and age; and adjusted for smoking status, BMI, physical activity, energy intake, educational level and alcohol intake. RESULTS: We included 394,255 participants (68.1% women; mean age at recruitment 52.1 years). After a mean follow-up of 13.6 years, there were 184 incident cases of CD and 459 incident cases of UC. Risk of CD was higher in those with a lower nutritional quality, that is higher FSAm-NPS-DI Score (fourth vs. first quartile: aHR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.24-3.36; p-trend: <0.01). Among items of the FSAm-NPS-DI Score, low intakes of dietary fibre and fruits/vegetables/legumes/nuts were associated with higher risk of CD. Nutritional quality was not associated with risk of UC (fourth vs. first quartile of the FSAm-NPS-DI Score: aHR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.69-1.21; p-trend: 0.76). CONCLUSIONS: A diet with low nutritional quality as measured by the FSAm-NPS-DI Score is associated with a higher risk of CD but not UC.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is one of the two types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBDs), which have a pivotal role in weakening the quality of lives of suffering patients. According to some recent studies, significant changes in dietary patterns may have contributed to the increased prevalence of UC. Potential renal acid load (PRAL) is an index used to estimate dietary acid load of the diet. The aim of the current study is to investigate the association between PRAL and odds of UC. The current case-control study included 62 newly diagnosed cases of UC and 124 healthy controls. Dietary habits of participants in the last year were collected with a valid food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Thereafter, PRAL score was calculated based on a formula containing the dietary intake of protein, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Participants were categorized according to quartiles of PRAL. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds' ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of UC across quartiles of PRAL. The results of the current study indicated that in the crude model, participants in the fourth quartile of PRAL had 2.51 time higher odds of UC compared with those in the first quartile of the PRAL [(OR 2.51; 95% CI 1.03-6.14), (P = 0.043)]. After adjustment for age and biological gender, this positive association remained significant [(OR 2.99; 95% CI 1.16-7.72), (P = 0.023)]. In the final model, after further adjustment for BMI, current smoking, education, Helicobacter pylori infection, and dietary intakes of total energy, omega-3 fatty acids, trans-fatty acids, and total dietary fiber, the odds of UC in the highest quartile of PRAL was significantly higher compared to the lowest quartile [(OR 3.08; 95% CI 1.01-9.39), (P = 0.048)]. So, we observed that higher dietary acid load assessed by PRAL score is associated with greater odds of UC.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including subtypes Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder most often diagnosed in young adulthood. The incidence and prevalence of pediatric-onset IBD is increasing globally. IBD is likely caused by an interplay of multiple environmental factors resulting in a dysregulated mucosal response to the commensal intestinal microbiota in genetically predisposed individuals. This article provides an overview of pediatric IBD epidemiology and environmental risk factors associated with its development, such as the Hygiene Hypothesis, air pollution, greenspace and blue space, neonatal factors, antibiotics, and diet.

We aimed to conduct this dose-dependent meta-analysis to examine the relation between total protein, animal protein, and its sources with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We searched databases, comprising PubMed/Medline, Web of Science (ISI), Embase, and Google Scholar, for the published studies up to 28 March 2023. Prospective cohort study designs that investigated associations between dietary intake of various animal protein sources and with risk of IBD in the general population were identified. Eleven prospective cohort studies with 4,302,554 participants and 8067 cases were considered eligible. Findings indicated that higher intake of dairy was significantly associated with a lower risk of IBD (relative risk [RR]: 0.81; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.72, 0.90), Crohn disease (RR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.56, 0.86), and ulcerative colitis (RR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.75, 0.94). There was no association between different sources of animal protein and the risk of IBD. The dose-response analysis suggested that each 100 g/d increment in dietary total meat consumption was associated with a 38% greater risk of IBD. Moreover, a positive linear association was found between total meat intake and risk of IBD (Pnonlinearity = 0.522, Pdose-response = 0.005). Overall, among the dietary sources of protein, the risk of IBD increased only with increasing total meat intake, and the consumption of protein from dairy products was found to be a protective factor against the IBD risk. This trial was registered at PROSPERO as CRD42023397719.

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbial transplantation (FMT) is a promising new method for treating active ulcerative colitis (UC), but knowledge regarding FMT for quiescent UC is scarce. AIM: To investigate FMT for the maintenance of remission in UC patients. METHODS: Forty-eight UC patients were randomized to receive a single-dose FMT or autologous transplant via colonoscopy. The primary endpoint was set to the maintenance of remission, a fecal calprotectin level below 200 µg/g, and a clinical Mayo score below three throughout the 12-mo follow-up. As secondary endpoints, we recorded the patient's quality of life, fecal calprotectin, blood chemistry, and endoscopic findings at 12 mo. RESULTS: The main endpoint was achieved by 13 out of 24 (54%) patients in the FMT group and by 10 out of 24 (41%) patients in the placebo group (log-rank test, P = 0.660). Four months after FMT, the quality-of-life scores decreased in the FMT group compared to the placebo group (P = 0.017). In addition, the disease-specific quality of life measure was higher in the placebo group than in the FMT group at the same time point (P = 0.003). There were no differences in blood chemistry, fecal calprotectin, or endoscopic findings among the study groups at 12 mo. The adverse events were infrequent, mild, and distributed equally between the groups. CONCLUSION: There were no differences in the number of relapses between the study groups at the 12-mo follow-up. Thus, our results do not support the use of a single-dose FMT for the maintenance of remission in UC.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with medically refractory ulcerative colitis who previously would have undergone surgery can now elect for subsequent medical therapy. METHODS: In a commercially insured population, we evaluated the proportion of patients initiating second-line, third-line, or fourth-line treatment who underwent colectomy in the following 12 months. RESULTS: Among 3,325 patients with ulcerative colitis, the colectomy rate within 12 months of a switch in therapy increased from 12% with the first switch to 17% and 19% with the second and third switches, respectively ( P < 0.001). DISCUSSION: Treatment effectiveness declines with successive switching; however, even after initiating fourth-line therapy, most patients remain surgery-free.

BACKGROUND: A previous comparative analysis of the time trends of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), multiple sclerosis (MS), Crohn's disease (CD), and ulcerative colitis (UC) suggested that the occurrence of all four diseases was precipitated by exposure to similar environmental risk factors during early lifetime. In the present cross-sectional study, it was hypothesized that besides their resembling temporal variations the four diseases would also show similar geographic distributions. METHODS: Using the vital statistics of 21 countries from 1951 to 2020, overall and age-specific death rates from the four diseases were calculated for each individual country. The death rates of different countries were compared using linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The data revealed strikingly similar geographic distributions of all four diseases. Their occurrence was common in Europe and relatively uncommon in countries outside Europe. Further stratification by consecutive age groups showed that for each disease analyzed separately, there were significant correlations amongst each two sequential age groups. In HL and UC, the inter-age correlations started at age 5 years or less. In MS and CD, the inter-age correlations only started at age 15 years. CONCLUSIONS: The similarities in the geographic distributions of death rates from HL, MS, CD, and UC suggest that these four diseases share a set of one or more common environmental risk factors. The data also support the contention that the exposure to such shared risk factors starts during an early period of lifetime.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ultra-processed food [UPF] consumption has been linked to globally increasing incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases, including inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD]. We aimed to investigate the association between UPF consumption and IBD incidence, prevalence, and IBD-relevant outcomes. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional and prospective cohort study in 187 854 individuals included in the national UK Biobank, using 24-h dietary recall questionnaires. Multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression were used to examine the association between UPFs and the prevalence and incidence risk of IBD, respectively. RESULTS: A total of 185 849 participants with a mean age of 56.2 were included, with a mean follow-up of 9.84 years. During follow-up, 841 developed IBD (251 Crohn's disease [CD], and 590 ulcerative colitis [UC]). UPF intake in IBD patients was significantly higher: CD: odds ratio [OR] 1.94 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.52, 2.49, p <0.001); UC: OR 1.39 [95% CI: 1.17, 1.65, p <0.001]. Compared with low consumption, higher UPF consumption was significantly associated with incident CD: hazard ration [HR] 2.00 [95% CI: 1.32, 3.03, p = 0.001], but not UC. We also found a significant association between UPF intake and need of IBD-related surgery: HR 4.06 [95% CI: 1.52, 10.86, p = 0.005]. CONCLUSION: Higher intake of UPFs was associated with higher incidence of CD, but not UC. In individuals with a pre-existing diagnosis of IBD, consumption of UPFs was significantly higher compared with controls, and was associated with an increased need for IBD-related surgery. Further studies are needed to address the impact of UPF intake on disease pathogenesis and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to assess the relationship between diet quality and risk of older-onset Crohn's disease [CD] and ulcerative colitis [UC]. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 83 147 participants from the Swedish Mammography Cohort and the Cohort of Swedish Men. We used food frequency questionnaires to calculate adherence scores to multiple derived healthy diet patterns: Alternate Healthy Eating Index [AHEI], Healthy Eating Index-2015 [HEI-2015], Healthful Plant-Based Diet Index [HPDI], and modified Mediterranean Diet Score [mMED] at baseline in 1997 in both cohorts. Diagnoses of CD and UC were retrieved from the Swedish Patient Register. We used Cox proportional hazards modelling to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios [HRs] and 95% confidence intervals [CIs]. RESULTS: Through December of 2017, we confirmed 164 incident cases of CD and 395 incident cases of UC. Comparing the highest with the lowest quartiles, the adjusted HRs of CD were 0.73 [95% CI, 0.48, 1.12, ptrend = 0.123] for AHEI; 0.90 [0.57, 1.41, ptrend = 0.736] for HEI 2015; 0.52 [95% CI 0.32, 0.85, ptrend = 0.011] for HPDI; and 0.58 [95% CI 0.32, 1.06, ptrend = 0.044] for mMED. In contrast, we did not observe an association between any diet quality score and risk of UC. CONCLUSIONS: We found that several healthy eating patterns were associated with a lower risk of older-onset CD. Our findings provide a rationale for adapting different healthy dietary patterns based on individuals' food preferences and traditions in designing future prevention strategies for IBD.

Understanding the heterogeneous intestinal microenvironment is critical to uncover the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Recent advances in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) have identified certain cell types and genes that could contribute to IBD; however, a comprehensively integrated analysis of these scRNA-seq datasets is not yet available. Here we introduce scIBD, a platform for single-cell meta-analysis of IBD with interactive and visualization features, which combines highly curated single-cell datasets in a uniform workflow, enabling identifying rare or less-characterized cell types in IBD and dissecting the commonalities, as well as the differences between ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. scIBD also incorporates multifunctional information-including regulon activity, GWAS-implicated risk genes and genes targeted by therapeutics-to infer clinically relevant cell-type specificity. Collectively, scIBD is a user-friendly web-based platform for the community to analyze the transcriptome features and gene regulatory networks associated with the pathogenesis and treatment of IBD at single-cell resolution.

Background and Objective: Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (RPC-IPAA) is usually preferred surgical treatment for ulcerative colitis (UC). Although treated primarily medically, some refractory and complicated cases of UC may require surgical intervention. It eliminates chronic UC and the risk of colonic cancer. This research aims to study the risk factors associated with the development of postoperative complications. Methodology: For this cohort study, we included all the patients who underwent RPC-IPAA in the Department of Gastroenterology, Sheth Vadilal Sarabhai General Hospital, Ahmedabad, over 6 years. Data of the patients were obtained retrospectively from the medical records. We collected the data and analyzed using appropriate statistical tests to look for preoperative patient variables associated with late complications. Late complications were defined as those developed after 1 month. Results: Out of 32 patients, 19 were male and 13 were female, with an average age of 32.3 years at the time of operation. Thirteen patients developed complications such as pouchitis (n = 6), incisional hernia (n = 3), bowel obstruction (n = 2), pouch leakage (n = 1), and erectile dysfunction (n = 1). We found serum albumin <3 mg/dl and pancolitis associated with more postoperative late complications with P = 0.007 and 0.04, respectively, which is statistically significant. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that low preoperative albumin level and pancolitis are risk factors for late complications of IPAA. Preoperative nutritional support, especially albumin, could reduce late complications.


Résumé L'IPAA (iléopouch-anal anastomose) est une procédure chirurgicale complexe qui, lorsqu'elle est réalisée par un chirurgien expérimenté, peut donner d'excellents résultats. De plus, il est important de comprendre les complications et leur prise en charge. Nos résultats mettent en lumière les facteurs associés aux complications chez les patients ayant subi une IPAA (iléopouch-anal anastomose) pour la CU (colite ulcéreuse). Dans notre population d'échantillon, une concentration sérique d'albumine préopératoire inférieure à 3 mg/dl et une pancolite ont été associées à des complications postopératoires. Cette étude démontre que des taux d'albumine préopératoires bas et la pancolite sont des facteurs de risque de complications tardives de l'IPAA. Un soutien nutritionnel préopératoire, en particulier l'albumine, pourrait réduire les complications tardive. Mots-clés: Iléite de reflux, Hypoalbuminemia, pancolite, colite ulcéreuse, pouchite.

RESUMO

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, progressive immune-mediated inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract. Environmental risk factors play a role in developing either type of IBD, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis; although the exact mechanism is still unknown. Herein, we review environmental risks from early life exposures, lifestyle and hygiene, vaccinations, surgeries, exposure to drugs and gastrointestinal pathogens that may increase the risk of developing IBD.

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiome transfer (FMT) targeting gut microbiome dysbiosis is an emerging therapy for ulcerative colitis (UC). There is however no consensus on protocols for performing FMT in UC, especially in relation to time after donor feces defecation. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective analysis of patients with moderate-severe UC (total Mayo Clinic score ≥6 and endoscopic Mayo Clinic subscore of ≥2) treated with FMT between September 2017 and December 2019 at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, India. Fresh fecal samples from unrelated healthy voluntary donors were administered through colonoscopy at weeks 0, 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, and 22. Time interval between donor feces defecation and FMT procedure was recorded for each FMT session and the mean time of seven sessions was designated aika. Impact of aika on clinical response and safety of FMT was evaluated. RESULTS: During the study period, 123 adult patients (mean age 33.75±11.97 years, 61.8% [n=76] males) with moderate-severe UC (mean total Mayo Clinic and endoscopic Mayo Clinic scores 7.49±1.60 and 2.50±0.50, respectively) were treated with FMT. The mean aika was 2.29±0.75 h. The aika was smaller in patients who responded to FMT as compared to non-responders (2.13±0.75 h vs. 2.71±0.76 h, p=0.0002) as well as in patients achieving clinical remission (2.15±0.76 h vs. 2.42±0.76 h, p=0.05). There was no significant impact of aika on adverse effects except for the incidence of borborygmi after FMT, which was higher in patients with aika ≤2 h. CONCLUSION: Early FMT after donor feces defecation favorably impacts the clinical response rates in patients with active UC.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have been related to high-sugar dietary patterns, but the associations of different types of beverages with IBD risk are largely unknown. AIMS: To examine any associations between intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, artificially sweetened beverages and natural juices and IBD risk METHODS: This cohort study included 121,490 participants in the UK Biobank who were free of IBD at recruitment. Intake of beverages was obtained from repeated 24-h diet recalls in 2009-2012. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations of beverage intake with IBD risk. RESULTS: During a mean (standard deviation) follow-up of 10.2 (1.5) years, we documented 510 incident IBD cases, (143 Crohn's disease (CD) and 367 ulcerative colitis (UC)). Compared to non-consumers, participants consuming >1 unit per day of sugar-sweetened beverages were at significantly higher risk of IBD (HR 1.51, 95% CI 1.11-2.05), but the trend was non-significant (p-trend = 0.170). This association was significant for CD (HR 2.05, 95% CI 1.22-3.46), but not for UC (HR 1.31, 95% CI 0.89-1.92). We did not observe significant associations for the consumption of artificially sweetened beverages or natural juices. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest an association between consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, rather than artificially sweetened beverages or natural juices, and IBD risk.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a kind of inflammatory bowel disease which is needed to be predicted. Objective: To analyze various animal models of UC conditions and summarizes the animal selection, model progression, and pathogenic mechanisms of UC animal models. Methods: We surveyed the research papers published in PubMed, Google Scholar, Baidu Scholar, CNKI, SciFinder, and Web of Science in the past 5 years and discussed the experimental animals, modeling methods, and pathogenic mechanisms. Results: In the selection of experimental animals, rats are considered the best experimental animals. The mainstream modeling methods can be categorized into the chemical stimulation method, immune stimulation method, and compound method, among which the compound method is the most successful. In the study of the pathogenesis of UC, the pathogenesis of UC is due to various pathogenic factors, such as nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandins (PG), proinflammatory factors (IL, TNF-α), and intestinal flora. Conclusion: The method of building an animal model of UC is well-established, providing a more targeted selection of animal models for future related experiments.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) affects the mucosa and submucosa of the large intestine. One of the mechanisms involved in its etiology is oxidative stress (OS), directly involved in the inflammatory process characteristic of UC. The Campsiandra laurifolia, known as acapurana, was described as possessing antioxidant properties. We used 24 male Wistar rats, divided into control (CO), control + acapurana (CO + A), colitis (CL), and colitis + acapurana (CL + A) groups. This study performed histological analysis, measuring anal sphincter pressure (ASP) and lipoperoxidation (LPO). The activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) levels were evaluated. The expression of the nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The statistical analysis used was the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test; values were expressed as mean ± standard error, and the significance level was p < 0.05. In the animals of the CL group, we observed the destruction of the crypts and the presence of mucosal ulcers, edema, and submucosal inflammatory infiltrate, as well as increased damage to the intestinal mucosa, reduced ASP, increased LPO and SOD activity, reduced GSH levels, and increased expression of NFkB and iNOS. The administration of C. laurifolia in the CL + A group was shown to cause regeneration of crypts, reduction of inflammatory infiltrate, reduction of damage to the intestinal mucosa, increase in ASP, and reduction in LPO with the restoration of SOD activity and GSH levels. The immunohistochemistry of NFkB and iNOS was significantly reduced. Therefore, the C. laurifolia aqueous extract appears to exert an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect in rats with AA-induced colitis. (AU)
